parker's never really been anxious in her fucking life. not compared to this. sure, she walked in on her parents with their brains blown out, avery clinging to her leg and crying, and she blamed herself for that (and still blames herself for that), but that was child's play compared to this. because shit like that rocks you so hard you can barely feel it.

you're just in it. you're living it. you're thinking how do i get to the next part? how do i get out of this alive. you suit up and you pick up the slack your parents couldn't and you pay their debts off with your fucking life is what you do.

she'd really, really hoped her life would be enough. avery got sucked into it too, but it was better than losing her. better to have them stay a family. but now, after everything, after years of being the fist for rocket. the body. the violence. the hammer. number six, 'cause that's how many hits they get until they're down, even if she can do it in one, or two, or three.

her leg is bouncing. she's waiting outside. she's thinking, this isn't fucking fair and i've done nothing wrong and look at me now, dross. fuckin' look what you've done.

they're gonna label her a traitor and all she can think of right now?

It is the first time in three years those letters have changed. While others have come and gone throughout the course of the organization's lifespan, this name has remained consistent. This office offers an experience lived by others, the man who owns it cultivating a reputation that could not be avoided. But for all the pretty letters that shine above the yawning portal, it is still the shade of Gavin Merlino that greets Parker when she steps across its threshold.[break][break]

The office is cold, both in atmosphere and presentation. PRESSURE hangs heavy in the air, settling over an office devoid of personal effects. Aside from the chair behind the bare wooden desk that an underboss occupies, there is only one other.[break][break]

Hard. Uncomfortable. Situated above a drain in the floor. There are no shackles on its arms, perhaps lending some semblance of safety.[break][break]

Yet when he speaks, "Sit," there's nowhere else to go.[break][break]

This is Cillian's least favourite part of his job.[break][break]

piss girl might real quickly turn into shit girl. she should have worn darker pants than her blue jeans. bumps are on the back of her neck; every hair is on end and she understands that this is real fear. brave face be damned; she's scared shitless. face pale, knuckles white. her jaw is tense because if she doesn't keep herself wound like an elastic band ready to snap, she might just break down.

under severe pressure, she discovers something about herself. she takes her seat and leans dramatically around the side of the chair to inspect the drain. the rusted color around it. a muscle in her cheek flicks.

"'cause toby patterson's a nosy piece of shit," she says, lip curled in a smirking snarl.

At first, it merely seems a sign of displeasure... until the Klefki detaches from his belt and jingles through the air. A cheerful sound in contrast to it's purpose — SHADOWS spring from the small Pokémon like grasping tendrils, curling around parker jones's limbs and pulling tight to HOLD her there.[break][break]

The underboss rises from his chair, shaking his head.[break][break]

"I'll have none of that."[break][break]

A warning, sharp and cold as the air around them. Pale fingers trace the surface of his desk as he circles it.[break][break]

"Now, I'm going to ask you again." He pushes up his sleeves, the movement exposing the tight bandaging around his right arm. Fingers flex, and he rolls his shoulders. "Do you know why you are here?"

here is what she discovered about herself: when being held to the wire, when at the knife's edge between life or death, she handles it the way she handles most uncomfortable things, only ten times worse.

when the shadows emerge, she startles, jumping in her chair. they clasp around her wrists and her ankles and bind her, resolutely. her head tilts, gaze sliding to one side to look at the tendrils that hold her in place. the klefki looks wrong.

she doesn't know anything about shadows. put that on the list - the novel, at this point - of Shit Parker Doesn't Know.

he draws his sleeve back. oh, she's done that move before. she knows what's coming next. she could stop it. probably. but her mouth is in no way connected to her brain right now.

"pegged ya for a kinky fuck, but i gotta be honest 'fore ya get your hopes up - i'm not into what you got down there."

she grins down at his crotch.

Were he not on the job, Cillian might've laughed. But here, in this office, there is only one way this could have gone.[break][break]

He punches her.[break][break]

It's quick, quicker than any human has the right to be, wisps of SHADOW MIASMA curling around his arm as he draws back. He'd pulled the punch, avoiding the force required to break anything, but he was still strong enough to make it hurt.[break][break]

A physical warning, when the verbal hadn't been enough.[break][break]

"In my experience, Jones," he says with unerring calm, as if he hadn't just assaulted her, "those who run their mouth have the most to hide."[break][break]

They had no proof of what she'd done. He'd planned to let her off with a warning if only she'd cooperated with him. Now, unresolved anger at all the other traitors they'd lost to the League bubbles to the surface. What business did she have making his job harder than it already was, if she wasn't guilty?[break][break]

He clicks his tongue again, and the shadows tighten their grip — particularly around the leg he'd seen her favouring.[break][break]

"Start talking."

he's pulling his punches, which is a sobering thought. that and her still-healing over, busted face and bruised lip do not appreciate being punched right now. they twinge and she jerks forward, restraints ringing her with lovely red marks.

this simultaneously wants her to cooperate with him and also spit in his face. does she go the self-preservation route? of course not. her blood's boiling, she's scared shitless, and homeboy here just summoned shadow tentacles or whatever the fuck around his arm.

"what kinda - heughn - std is that?" she says through a couple of gasps. "i gotta go get tested now?" blood dribbles neatly down her chin.

It is fortunate for her that she does not spit at him. What's unfortunate is her continued resistance, eliciting a shake of Cillian's head that tosses blond hair into his eyes. He smooths it back with the same hand he'd used to punch her.[break][break]

"Do you value your own life so little?"[break][break]

He clicks his tongue.[break][break]

Shadows snake about her neck, tightening around her throat. Not enough to choke, but enough that each labored breath would feel a herculean effort, especially with the PRESSURE so thick in the air.[break][break]

But that is not the punishment.[break][break]

No. That comes as the tendrils of void around her wound twist, pulling at torn flesh to open it anew.[break][break]

"I can make this much worse." Cillian has lit a cigarette, the smoke from his lips mingling with his MIASMA. "Do let me know when you're done playing games."[break][break]

Bitterness taints an ordinarily soothing voice into something hateful and cold.

well, that one hurts like a bitch. she flinches back from the words. tendrils shiver over her skin and she wants to vomit, but she loses the ability to when they move up to coil around her neck. if this were any less dire, if she could manage around the pressure in the air, she would have bitten out one last remark.

'cause this is weird fetish porno city right here.

but her sense of humor drains with the rest of the color in her face. she can't even reach up to claw at the thing pressing hard on her windpipe. all she manages is a gasp and a narrowing of her eyes.

she searches racing thoughts. what does she even say? that she wanted to bone the ship captain, but it's more than that but the feelings are clearly only one way except when they're not but they can't do anything about it and it doesn't matter anyway because parker's starting to feel a little confused and over the whole thing?

no time to blurt any of that out. she nearly bites her tongue off when the shadows rip into her flesh, flaying the shoddy stitch job she'd put there in the first place. blood seeps down the side of her leg, dark red and viscous.

"i gave you...my whole life...fucker," she squeezes out, fingers tightening against the edges of the chair. i gave this organization my whole fucking life.

Nomi had never been called into Cillian Quinn's office during an active interrogation before; more often than not, witnesses capable of testifying for or against a potential traitor were those assigned to infiltration or enforcement. She had visited the guilty in Rocket's holding cells, of course: had requested some of them for her own experiments. Why Cillian thought she would have something to contribute to his current investigation, however, left a bad taste in her mouth.[break][break]
There was really only one person with a connection to the Head Scientist that might be in some kind of trouble with Rocket leadership. Nomi's stomach churned as she faced the closed door before her, Valerian on one side, an Unown-N on the other. She knew what Cillian was capable of. She knew how it would feel inside that room, Lugia's PRESSURE already reaching her beyond its threshold, oppressive to an almost painful degree. Her head throbbed, but she steeled herself against what awaited her.[break][break]
Nomi opened the door.[break][break]
The bitter smell of cigarette smoke mixed with the metallic scent of blood met Nomi as she entered. Cillian, Rocket underboss and one of the most dangerous people alive, stood over a red-haired woman slumped over in a familiar chair, tendrils of shadow miasma curling around her like death's fingertips. The woman looked like she'd been dragged to hell and back more than a few times. Nomi's chest constricted as her eyes noticed the blood dripping from the woman's leg, steadily seeping into the drain beneath the chair.[break][break]
Nomi wanted to scream, agonized by the scene before her. Cillian, who was like a brother to her, beloved and adored, forced into the horrible position of needing to hurt parker jones for a crime Nomi knew Parker had not committed. Not intentionally, anyway. Because this was Rocket, and Rocket had already abided by too many traitors. Cillian was just doing his job, the only job he knew how to do.[break][break]
Nomi found that, though she had always been able to look at blood without issue, something about seeing Parker's blood - so vivid against the pale floor - made her feel sick.[break][break]
"You requested me?" She asked softly of Cillian, mouth suddenly dry.

Cillian had said a similar thing, once. To declan walsh. My loyalty, my life, it's yours. Yet there had been none of the bitterness that parker jones spits as she strains against the binding shadows.[break][break]

"Yet you offer so little in your defense, when that life is on the line."[break][break]

She still hadn't answered his question. Each second that ticks by adds weight to the guilty verdict forming in his mind.[break][break]

Rocket was full of traitors. A garden full of choking weeds.[break][break]

It is fortunate for them both that Naomi Sato arrives in that moment, where Parker's fate balances on a knife's sharpened edge. In his mounting fury, Cillian had almost forgotten he'd summoned her as a witness. He'd expected to get more out of Parker in the meantime.[break][break]

She's oddly nervous, he notes of the Head Scientist, eyes narrowing as they fix upon her.[break][break]

"I did. Reports say you were the last person Jones was with before she decided to cozy up to a League captain." He thinks immediately of skyler dross purely based on personal experience and vendetta, not realising how on the mark his resentful thoughts could be. "As she's committed to playing games rather than answering my questions," with a pointed look at Parker, before he turns back to Nomi, "perhaps you may be able to shed more light on the situation."

the door opens. parker doesn't give them the time of day. 'cause if someone else is walking in, that means it's the death toll ringing. ding, dong, parker's dead! if she could backpedal and wrangle it all in - all her anger and her frustration - she would have done it differently. she would have practiced in front of the mirror a hundred times over if it meant she got to kept living.

she thinks this, and yet her eyes narrow at his accusatory tone.

the surprise on her face, fortunately, is made to the underboss's back. as is the guilt that crests in her eyes when they rest on nomi's face. she shifts her leg and bites her lip through the pain.

"you're missin' the part where i punched her in the gut," she mutters.

For a brief moment, they locked eyes. Parker stared openly at Nomi with guilt. Shock. Defiance. Fear. A hurricane of emotions, each one warring for dominance. The guilt should have disturbed Nomi. Did it mean Parker had betrayed them? Or was it the sort of shame one felt when they'd unintentionally inconvenienced someone else with their own idiotic mistakes?[break][break]
But all Nomi wanted in that moment was to go to Parker, pull her into an embrace that would quiet the storm, take away all of the pain. Her hands twitched. It took all of her self control to stay put. To rip her gaze away from Parker's. To address Cillian.[break][break]
"I was," Nomi confirmed. "I accompanied her to the Granite Cave portal leading out of the Ultra Deep Sea. Before we could exit, however, dream mist overtook us. We were separated."[break][break]
She paused, letting that sink in. Cillian knew as well as she did what horrors the Interdream Zone could manifest. After all, they'd witnessed one such living nightmare together.[break][break]
"I do not know what transpired after that," Nomi continued, heart hammering. "But I can guarantee you that if Parker encountered a League Captain, she would have given them hell."[break][break]
She could not, in good faith, say that Parker was a Rocket loyalist. She also could not lie to Cillian, even if she'd wanted to. There was really only one way to go about this. She had to lay her heart bare.[break][break]
"I trust Parker Jones with my life, Cillian. She is the most stupidly courageous person I know, fiercely loyal to that which she has sworn to protect. Which, most of the time, is me. You trust me, don't you? Then trust her."

He has learned well to read people. One needn't be an expert to deduce that there was something between them; the Head Scientist seems to tear her gaze from the captive with great difficulty.[break][break]

Here, in this office, he hardens himself against the empathy that tugs at his gut, that urges him to consider how he'd feel if Temp were the one tied up and bleeding. If it were Walsh standing over him, demanding to know how he'd betrayed them.[break][break]

His attention shifts to parker jones as she speaks up.[break][break]

"Perhaps you might have led with that, rather than your theories about my sex life," he says coolly, cluing Naomi Sato in to what he'd been dealing with before she'd stepped into the room.[break][break]

He looks back to Nomi as she speaks.[break][break]

The involvement of the INTERDREAM MIST is hardly surprising; they'd ran afoul of it themselves.[break][break]

You trust me, don't you?[break][break]

He does. But his trust has led him astray before.[break][break]

"Would you stake your life on her innocence, Dr. Sato?"[break][break]

It's an unfair thing to ask. An unfair position to put her in. Yet he does it all the same, because this is what Rocket demands.
